Fire safety tips during the summer season

With temperatures rising, it’s important to stay safe — not just from the heat, but also from the increased risk of fire during a heatwave.
Hot, dry conditions can make homes more vulnerable to accidental fires. Below are some essential tips to help keep you, your family, and your home safe this summer.
At Home and Outdoors
1. Avoid BBQs on balconies or close to buildings
Even small flames can quickly become dangerous in hot, dry weather. Use BBQs only in safe, open areas like your garden or public parks (where permitted) — and never on balconies or near homes.
2. Dispose of cigarettes safely
Do not throw cigarette butts out of windows or onto dry grass. Always use a proper ashtray and make sure they’re fully out before disposing.
3. Be careful with candles and incense
Keep flames away from curtains, furniture and anything flammable. Never leave candles or incense burning unattended.
4. Don’t overload electrical sockets
Fans, air conditioning units and cooling devices can put extra pressure on sockets. Use one plug per socket and unplug items when not in use.
5. Keep hallways and fire exits clear
Make sure your escape route is always free of clutter. In an emergency, every second counts.
6. Store items like lighters and matches safely
Keep them out of reach of children and away from hot areas or direct sunlight.
Household Items to Watch Out For
7. Keep aerosols out of the sun
Spray cans (like deodorants, air fresheners or cleaning products) can explode if they get too hot. Store them in cool places and away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
Waste & Rubbish Safety
8. Don’t store rubbish or bulky items in communal areas
During a heatwave, waste can become a fire risk. Please make sure rubbish is disposed of properly and keep communal spaces clear.
9. Bin fires are real – and dangerous
Keep wheelie bins and rubbish bags away from walls, doors, and windows. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight.
Inside Your Flat or Home
10. Turn off appliances when you leave
Especially things like fans, cookers, and air fryers. Unplug what you’re not using.
11. Check your smoke alarms
Test them weekly. If you’re renting from us and your alarm isn’t working, let us know straight away.
12. Open windows for ventilation
Good airflow helps reduce heat build-up in your home, lowering fire risk and helping you stay cool. Just remember to close windows when leaving the property or before going to bed, especially on lower floors.
