Staying warm this winter: Essential tips for a cozy home

Staying warm this winter: Essential tips for a cozy home

As the colder months approach, it’s important to ensure your home is prepared to stay warm and comfortable.

At Karibu, we want to help you make the most of your heating system and reduce the risks associated with winter weather. Here are some simple tips to keep your home warm, your energy bills manageable, and your heating system running smoothly this winter.

1. Check Your Boiler Pressure

A drop in your boiler’s pressure can cause your heating system to stop working effectively. If your radiators aren’t heating up, or you notice cold spots, it may be time to repressurise your boiler. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Locate the pressure gauge: This is usually found on the front of the boiler.
  • Check the pressure: The ideal pressure should be between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the pressure is below 1, it’s time to top it up.
  • Repressurise your boiler: Most boilers have a filling loop (a small valve or lever). Simply open the valve and allow water to flow into the system until the pressure reaches 1.5 bar. Be sure to close the valve once the pressure is correct.
  • Check for leaks: After repressurising, check for any visible leaks around the system to prevent future issues.

If you're unsure about the process or don’t feel confident doing it yourself, feel free to contact us, and we’ll be happy to assist.

2. Bleed Your Radiators

If your radiators are cold at the top, it’s likely that air has become trapped inside. Bleeding your radiators releases this trapped air, helping your system work more efficiently.

  • Turn off your heating: Let your radiators cool down before attempting to bleed them.
  • Use a radiator key: Slowly turn the valve at the top of the radiator to let the air escape.
  • Close the valve: Once water starts to come out, close the valve tightly.

3. Use Curtains and Draught Excluders

Draughts can make your home feel colder and increase heating costs. By using thick curtains and draught excluders, you can keep warmth in and prevent heat from escaping.

  • Curtains: Keep them closed during the night and on particularly cold days. You can open them during the day to let in sunlight and naturally warm your home.
  • Draught excluders: Place them at the bottom of doors or windows to block cold air from entering.

4. Ensure Proper Insulation

Proper insulation helps maintain the temperature inside your home. If you haven't already, consider insulating your loft, walls, and floors to reduce heat loss. If you're unsure whether your home is adequately insulated, we can assist with advice or direct you to local services that can help.

5. Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

In winter, more people use gas appliances, such as heaters and cookers, so it’s essential to ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries regularly.

6. Keep Heating Efficient

To maximise your heating efficiency, try not to block radiators with furniture or curtains. Set your thermostat to a consistent temperature, ideally around 18-21°C (64-70°F), and avoid turning it up and down too frequently.

By following these simple steps, you can stay warm this winter while keeping your home energy-efficient and safe.
