Black history month 2024: honouring our icons and celebrating our community

This year, we are highlighting four iconic figures, each of whom devoted their lives to the pursuit of equality.

As we celebrate Black History Month this October, we take the opportunity to reflect on the remarkable contributions of Black individuals to our society and recognise the importance of diversity within our communties and organisation.

This year, we are highlighting four iconic figures, each of whom devoted their lives to the pursuit of equality:

Blair Peach

A passionate anti-racist activist, Blair Peach stood firm against injustice and inequality, working towards a fairer future for all. His legacy continues to inspire our commitment to human rights and equality.

Doreen Lawrence OBE

As a powerful voice for justice, Doreen Lawrence has relentlessly campaigned for the rights of Black individuals, especially in the wake of her son Stephen's tragic death. Her resilience and determination have led to impactful changes in the fight against racism and the pursuit of equality for all.

Mahatma Gandhi

Although not Black, Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violent resistance profoundly influenced Black leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, who adopted his approach in their own struggles against oppression. His teachings continue to inspire social justice movements worldwide, strengthening the fight for equality and justice within Black communities.

Martin Luther King Jr.

A cornerstone of the American civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr. championed non-violent protest against racial segregation and discrimination. His iconic “I Have a Dream” speech and unwavering dedication to equality continue to resonate, inspiring individuals worldwide to pursue justice and unity.

We also want to recognise our Black residents, who form an integral part of our community. Your resilience, contributions, and perspectives shape our shared experiences and drive our commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment. We are proud to serve you and to embody the values of equality, inclusion, and respect that define this month’s celebrations and our daily work.

In addition, we take this moment to acknowledge and celebrate our Black staff members. Your hard work, passion, and unique perspectives enrich our community, and we are proud to have you as part of our team.

Let us honour these icons, our residents, and our staff by nurturing an inclusive environment where everyone’s voice is respected and valued. Together, let’s continue building a community where everyone feels appreciated and empowered.
