Karibu Celebrates Black History Month 2025

Black History Month is a time to reflect, educate, and celebrate the contributions of Black people throughout history and across the world.

It’s an opportunity to honour the struggles, achievements, and cultural richness that have shaped society — and to continue the journey toward equality and justice.

Message from our Chief Executive, Ricky Scipio

As we mark Black History Month 2025, I am proud to stand with our community in celebrating the achievements, resilience, and cultural richness of Black people across the UK and beyond.

This year’s theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” speaks directly to the heart of Karibu’s mission. As the largest Black and Minority Ethnic housing association in the UK, our work is rooted in justice, dignity, and empowerment — values that have guided us for decades and continue to shape our future.

Black History Month is not only a time to reflect on the past — the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our society — but also to honour the present voices and future leaders within our communities. It’s a moment to stand firm in our identity, to celebrate our heritage with pride, and to recognise the power we hold when we come together.

We are inspired by the legacies of Blair Peach, Doreen Lawrence OBE, Mahatma Gandhi, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — four icons whose courage and commitment to justice continue to guide our work. Their stories remind us that change is possible when we stand together, speak out, and act with purpose.

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing stories from our staff and residents — voices that reflect the lived experiences, hopes, and contributions of our vibrant community. I encourage everyone to engage, learn, and celebrate with us.

Let this month be a catalyst for deeper understanding, stronger unity, and renewed commitment to equity — not just in housing, but in every part of society.

Honouring Black History Pioneers

Black history is filled with pioneers who broke barriers, challenged injustice, and paved the way for future generations. Their courage and vision continue to inspire movements for change and equality.

Karibu’s Four Icons of Justice and Peace

At Karibu, we honour four individuals whose lives and legacies reflect our values of justice, peace, and community empowerment:

  • Blair Peach – A teacher and anti-racism activist who stood up against injustice. His legacy reminds us of the importance of speaking out and standing firm in solidarity.

  • Doreen Lawrence OBE – A tireless campaigner for justice following the tragic murder of her son, Stephen Lawrence. Her work has transformed policing and race relations in the UK.

  • Mahatma Gandhi – A global symbol of nonviolent resistance, Gandhi’s philosophy of peaceful protest continues to influence movements for justice around the world.

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – A towering figure in the American civil rights movement, Dr. King’s dream of equality and his powerful words still resonate today.
