Supporting Independent Living: Aids and Adaptations

Supporting Independent Living: Aids and Adaptations

At Karibu, we’re committed to helping our residents live safely, comfortably, and independently. One of the ways we support this is through our Aids and Adaptations service.

What are Aids and Adaptations?

Aids and adaptations are changes or additions to your home that make everyday tasks easier and safer. These can be small adjustments or larger changes, depending on your needs.

Examples include:

  • Grab rails and handrails
  • Ramps and widened doorways
  • Level-access (walk-in) showers
  • Stairlifts or other specialist equipment
  • Adjustments to kitchens or bathrooms

These improvements can make a real difference to your safety, mobility, and overall quality of life.

Who can apply?

You may be eligible for aids and adaptations if you have a medical condition, disability, or reduced mobility that affects how you use your home.

If you feel your current home setup is making daily life difficult or unsafe, please get in touch — we’re here to help.

How does the process work?

  1. Assessment
Most requests begin with an assessment by an Occupational Therapist (OT), who will recommend suitable changes.

  2. Application review
Once we receive the recommendation, we’ll review it and consider the best way to meet your needs.

  3. Approval and installation
If approved, we’ll arrange for the work to be carried out. Larger adaptations may take longer and involve external contractors.

Funding support

In some cases, larger adaptations may be funded through grants, such as a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) from your local authority. We can guide you through this process where applicable.

Supporting you every step of the way

We understand that everyone’s needs are different. Our team will work closely with you and relevant professionals to ensure any adaptations are practical, suitable, and completed as smoothly as possible.
